Bridging Business and Technology at Protiviti

Merlin Eck

Merlin Eck operates at the intersection of two worlds: business and technology, using his dual fluency to deliver innovative solutions to complex challenges.

"My goal is to be an ambassador for technology in the business world—and for the business world in the technology world."

Using a Diverse Background to Solve Complex Challenges

His early technical background studying computer science-focused information systems in Germany and working as a freelance software developer grounded him deeply in tech, while his studies at the University of Illinois Gies College of Business steeped him in business fundamentals. Now a Senior Manager at Protiviti, Merlin’s expertise enables him to build connections between teams, clients, and processes, ensuring that technology aligns seamlessly with business needs.

Merlin’s diverse perspective was instrumental in the creation of Protiviti’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Creator—a generative AI tool that transforms video recordings into process documentation. The outcome: a 50% time savings on client engagements and faster, more consistent results.

Scaling Innovation Across Borders

What sets the SOP Creator apart is its adaptability across geographies and functions. Working with Protiviti's Business Process Improvement and Intelligent Process Automation experts ensured that the SOP Creator is an accelerator across all functions at Protiviti.

Merlin collaborated with legal and IT teams to ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, particularly in Europe. While deploying the tool in Germany, he helped address challenges like dynamic IP addresses to maintain seamless operations. His ability to navigate both cultural nuances and technical complexities has enabled the SOP Creator to scale internationally, with active use in the UK and USA and plans for further expansion.

“In developing new technologies, it's crucial to ensure they not only meet our innovation goals but also comply with relevant legal standards, making them practical and secure for global use,” says Merlin.

Solving Real Problems with Dual Expertise

The SOP Creator is just one example of how Merlin bridges business and technology to deliver real-world impact.

He also used Microsoft Power Platform tools to help a marina client assess infrastructure risks, enabling faster, more reliable decision-making. Together with the clients accounting team, he developed a capital expenditure application that streamlined operations and ensured consistent data validation. The new workflow allowed the client an 80% faster approval time for new CAPEX projects.

“My goal is to be an ambassador for technology in the business world—and for the business world in the technology world.”

Merlin’s work exemplifies Protiviti’s commitment to innovation with purpose. By aligning technical solutions with business needs and scaling them globally, he continues to drive meaningful outcomes for clients and teams alike.
